Focus

The Undergraduate Physics and Nuclear Engineering Annual Review (UPNEAR) is an open-access journal published by the West Point Press and aimed at the advancement and sharing of applied physics, space, and nuclear engineering related topics that support mission related priorities.

UPNEAR is dedicated to advancing undergraduate scholarship in science and technology by publishing research that addresses critical challenges and emerging opportunities at the national level.

Mission

Our mission is to foster innovation, analytical rigor, and interdisciplinary thinking through unclassified research in applied physics, nuclear engineering, space science, and related fields. By providing a platform for original ideas and comprehensive reviews, UPNEAR seeks to prepare future leaders to contribute meaningfully to scientific progress and mission-relevant priorities.

Scope

UPNEAR publishes undergraduate research papers that present innovative theories, experimental results, and comprehensive literature reviews.

Types of Submissions:

  • Short Research Notes (5–7 pages): Brief papers that may not represent fully developed research threads but provide valuable insights or preliminary findings.
  • Full-Length Research Articles (up to 10 pages): In-depth discussions and presentations of well-developed research ideas.
  • Literature Reviews (up to 15 pages): Papers that organize, synthesize, and critically analyze significant published literature on topics relevant to the journal.

Publication Frequency 

  • Annually in July

 

Open Access Statement

This journal offers immediate open access to its content, based on the principle that freely available research enhances the global exchange of knowledge. Open access means that all content can be accessed without any cost to the user or their institution. Users have the freedom to read, download, copy, distribute, and print the full texts of the articles, search or link to the full texts, and use the articles for any other lawful purpose. Importantly, there is no need to request prior permission from the publisher or the author for these activities.

 

Peer Review Statement

Submissions will be single-blind reviewed on a rolling basis up until the final submission deadline of 10 April.  Accepted publications will be notified by 17 April and revisions will be due by 15 May.   All contributions will be initially assessed by the editor for suitability for the journal. Papers deemed suitable are then typically sent to at least one external reviewer to assess the quality of the paper. The Editor is responsible for the final decision regarding acceptance or rejection of articles. The Editor’s decision is final.
